Choosing a Reel Size

The reel size, is denoted by the 4-digit series number (e.g. 1000, 2000, 3000). The larger the number, the larger the reel.

The size of the reel will determine how much fishing line, and more importantly, how thick(strong) of fishing line, it can hold.

Generally speaking, larger fish, 15 pounds+, will require a larger reel (series 7000), while small-medium size fish can do just fine with smaller reels.

For the average fisher in Canada, we recommend going with something that can support the average Canadian fish size: 1-10lbs (series 3000). Although realistically, you could go even lower. In Ontario, for example, fish sizes range from 1-5 pounds, making a series 1000-2000 a perfectly acceptable choice.
